They are based on the same body, but the 90 line is higher content.
For example, the 90 have leather and wood trim in the interior as standard,
and more standard features. The 1988-1990 80 FWD had a 2.0L four cylinder
(108hp) engine while the 80 quattros had the 10V 2.3L five (130hp). The
90s around that vintage all had the 2.3L five (except automatic FWD models,
which had the 2.0L four). Later 80 FWDs (1991) got the 2.3L five, and
90 quattros got the 20V 2.3L five (164hp).
The 80 designation was dropped in 1992, and 1993 and later 90 series got
a redesigned hood and trunk, and switched to the 2.8L V6 engine (172hp).
The 90 was replaced by the A4 in 1996.
These are all descriptions of the U.S. models.
