This is a generalisation, and there are exceptions, but in the UK, Audi
restarted the 90 series in 1984 (there were some 90s back in the 70s) and it
was effectively an Audi 80 with a higher level of trim (inside and out) and
it used the 5 cylinder engine (either 2l or 2.2l).
I have a 1984 Audi 80 quattro, and it is a 5 cylinder version. At the end
of 1984, Audi sold virtually the same car badged as an Audi 90 quattro, and
also sold an (underpowered) Audi 80 quattro which had a 1.8l 4 cylinder
engine.
