The German workshop manual states in heavily underlined type that the engine 
_MUST_  be switched off if the engine bay is spray-cleaned.
 
One issue, perhaps, is the crankshaft oil seals.  The crankcase is under a 
gentle vacuum and moderate quantities of air are sucked in at all times - more 
when the seals are worn.  You might have replaced some of this air with water 
...
