Don't forget that (at least here in NL) a lot of people drive their Diesels
until they fall apart, no maintenance whatsoever. A friend of mine,
_competent_ VAG mechanic (wouldn't let anyone else near my car) specializes
in VW vans and light trucks, most with Diesel engines here. He told me he
regularly does oil changes like this: warm up engine, take out oil plug,
wait in vain, take oil pan off and start to chisel away. Most oil pans need
a cleaning out with something like brake fluid, and lots of hard work with
a chisel. Not a lot of people know, or care, about the shorter service
intervals on a Diesel engine vs. petrol...

My friend's own '90 VW Transporter TD always runs perfectly, no clouds of smoke.
