RE: Dr. Diesel (no audi content)

Most of the deisel output that you are noticing is actually soot--not hydrocarbons.  
Soot, being heavier, will lay down on everything in sight and look and smell awful, 
but is not worse for the environment in that regard, BION! (believe it or not).
