Quantum Synchro question

Hi Quattro/Synchro techies:

The family Quantum Synchro's developed a strange noise. A faint whine can
be heard while in motion, coming from the vicinity of the shift lever. It
sounds a little like gear noise, but does not depend on which gear it's
in.. ie seems to be dependent on road speed. Nor does it happen while
stopped, end revving the engine. The sound comes and goes, but I'm
thinking tranny or differential.

Any ideas? Please reply directly as I have temporarily unsubbed from the
list due to too much email.
