 can't see how advancing the timing would produce this problem, as the
duration of the spark (ie, the length of time available for the coil to
produce the necessary voltage) stays the same, regardless of the amount of
static advance dialed in....

Well, you both might be missing cylinder pressure issues. I'll assume Phil,
being a gentleman, did not apply any  _cold_ full load. Soooo, it only
stumbles at full load.
Fine. Two gaps to jump with highest possible cylinder pressures. 
Cough, stutter.
