I believe the best/only way to tell if it's an 87 is if the area around the
side window frams is painted body color or blacked out.  If it's blacked out
it's not and '87.  If the paint matches the rest of the car it is an '87.  

As far as being a "Special Edition" goes, the only special about it was that
it was the last half year of that model.  I don't think it was any sort of
marketing ploy by Audi.

Still can't figure out my white leather interior... Was it an option, some
sort of special package, or a custom job? 

I looked at an 86 C.E. that was Alpine white with red leather once.
Can you say gaudy?  :-)
