ATF in Oil

Running a quart of ATF for a few days before an oil change is an old
mechanic's trick to clean lifters - first found out about it about
1968. Doesn't hurt a thing except that it DOES thin the oil, so it's
better as a winter technique than a hot summer technique.

PS: Just heard today from my mechanic that he has more sludge
problems with Havoline than most oils down here. He sez it's a
paraffin-based oil and the hot temps in TX summers tend to break it
down and sludge engines up. He sez he can spot 'em when he pulls a
valve cover. (I worked in a Texaco station - I can tell Havoline oil
from letting ONE drop fall on a hot exhaust manifold - very
distinctive smell.)
