Top speed and vehicle weight

On a road surface that's less than smooth, a great deal of energy is absorbed 
(and ultimately dissipated as heat) by the tyre walls, shock absorbers, etc.
 
Ultimately this energy comes from the engine and could otherwise be employed 
against aerodynamic drag.
