Folks,
Have owned 86CGT Comm. Ed (yes with red interior!) since new. In 97, its
still a great car, but as we all know the market doesn't value old Audi's
highly. >10 years old and >100K miles and they are worth very litte :(.
The wife has an 88 Honda CRX HF. This makes us a owners of two 2 door
cars....and this summer we expect to become parents....so its time to add a
four door to the stable by taking advantage of the fact that Audi's >10
years old and >100K miles are great cars that sell for dirt cheap.
I've been thinking of leveraging my good experience and knowledge of the
86CGT to buy an 84-87 4K, hopefully a Quattro version as I want the I5 KT
engine. Life is easy as the Bentley for the 86CGT covers the 4K as well!
In the Southern California area, I think I can pick one up for $1500-$3000.
Sorry 5K owners, but from what I can tell the 4K with the I5 is a vastly
more reliable, albeit smaller/lighter, design than the 5K.....so I'm not
interested in the 5K.
I must admit, I've only been subscribed to this list for the last 3 months,
but the daily barrage of 100 emails has again rekindled my attachment to
the Audi marque.
Given this, how about some list advice:
1. Any thing make one year better than the next?
* All appear to use the KT 2.2L CIS-E I5 engine?
2. The Bentley's show a variety of 016 transmission types
used with the Quattro versions.....are these enhancements
that solve "expensive" issues?
3. Any list of "watch out for these issues" for 4KQs?
4. Should I buy an 86 4KQ Comm Edition to go with my
86 CGT Comm Edition? Two white/red cars or should
I get the charcoal/black. My experience is the
non-metallic white paint looks far better after 10 years
than the metallic charcoal paint.
5. Should I buy a car with >120K miles, as I would think
that the previous owner should have replaced the timing
belt/water pump at about 120K...not to mention likely
replaced the struts/springs/shocks....and hopefully the
tires?? As cars are valued on miles, I think a car with
>120K miles will cost less to buy and maintain than
a car with 100-120K miles. Make sense?
I have searched the archives....so personal experience is appreciated!
Thanks to all!!!

86 CGT Comm Edition (fun, good fun)
88 Honda CRX (fun too, but different type of fun)
8x 4KQ (in search of) (functional and fun)
