The intervals I've heard (and been following for quite a few years now) are:
N/A I5's : ~90K
10V Turbo's: ~ 90K
20V Turbo's: ~70-75K
I've followed this advice and have had no failures. I don't know if there is
a time as well as mileage guide. I usually end up with 20-30K miles/year on
the car so the mileage guide is hit pretty quick.
As for difficult. I've not done it myself but from looking at the posts it
seems to be a PIA. There are tools to help though.
Good luck, and BTW I'd get the belt replaced, particularly if you plan on any
track events. I've a '92 S4 as well, replaced the belt at 75K, it was
cracking so replacement seemed like relatively cheap insurance.
