This "L" designates the vehicle model year. And the dealer is absolutely
correct about the 1990 part.  The 20valves were brought to our side of the
pond beginning in the 1990 model year, however as your door sill implies
it was built earlier(simple logic can explain that one...).  As you
probably know the new models of cars begin arriving at dealers a few
months before the designation of their model year. Yes, you do have a 1990
90Q 20v but it is technically older than you may think.
