I just replaced my thermostat after a friend tested the engine temperature
with a laser test guage. I would highly recommend that you do this. I am
not the only one on the list that noticed low water and oil temps on the
guages, had the multi-sensor replaced to no avail, and complained of poor
mileage. Also, my car seemed to have poor heat output this winter.
I was able to replace the thermo. for about $60. total....1/2 hour labor,
$25 or $30 for the part. Be sure to insist in the correct Audi part. Doing
it yourself didn't look easy to me. Also, I avoided the dealer who quoted
me $130.
Mileage jumped minimum 2mpg, (hard to tell because within one week I also
replaced the O2 which gave me another bump up....currently 24mpg), great
heat output, temp. multi-sensor was probably fine all along.
