It's a quick check with a ordinary voltmeter. Mine was having similiar problems
and it turned out to be a loose belt. This was ~6months ago. The belt wasn't
even squealing. 15 minutes and $15 bucks lighter, I was in and out with no more
problems (for a while anyway..).
