Re: 1989 or 1990?
I believe everything's OK. Think Audi started calling the first 20V cars
the 1990 model year,even though they were build in '89 (in some cases
very early in '89). Dealer is right that the 10th digit equals the year;
started in 1980 with "A", skipped "I" & "J" I believe. My 1990 Coupe
Quattro also has "L" as the 10th digit and car was built in May '89.

I just bought a 1990 90q20v. Just as I was signing the papers I noticed
that the owner's manual said it was a 1989 even though all other info
(registration etc.) said it was a 1990. The dealer assured me it was a
1990 model and offered to buy it back if it was not a 1990 model.
The dealer also told me that the 10th digit of the serial number is a
"L" which means it is a 1990. The sill plate on the driver's door states
the date of manufacture of March 1989.
It does have the 20 valve engine.
Is this a 1989 ot 1990? Is the owner's manual a mistake?
Thanks in advance.
