Dat's a good point.  Can we defer to anyone on the list who is a mechanic or works 
with suspension for ruling on the spring thing?  I'm beginning to think my poor man's 
shock test idear ain't worth spit for springs, but I'd like to know more.  

It seems like minutae, but suspension is definitely the most interesting (and, 
technically speaking, accessible) aspect of automobiles to me!
