Phil as usual, whenever we don't disagree you are absolutely correct.
If they don''t make noise you might never know the engine is running and
forget to let go of the key !
Of course clickers and clackers are cool but bangers are broke. Sometimes
the valves get blamed for the faults of that silly little vacume pump.
On American iron ( hydraulics for decades ) they get lots of preload and only
make noise on engines that have gone 100k without oil changes. On American
muscle cars of the 60's they were mechanical and always made lots-o-noise.
On 'der Deutschlander, they appear to have gone to hydraulics only for the
maint. aspect ( mechanicals every 15k ). "Art of Engineering" didn't care
about
noise. The former Audi/VW mechanicals ( excluding air cooled) never made much
noise. Go figure.
"Audi" means " to listen ", so... listen to the noise and don't worry about
it.
