Re: Messing with sunroof

 I have a 1990 100 Q with the sunroof/moonroof. It's one of the thick cloth
sunroofs (instead of the plain glass that other car makers tend to use).

Took it to the audi people, and they said
 a) the right-side sunroof lifter was broken
 b) a complete overhaul, which they recommened would be about $300 to $400
 c) i could just get little part fixed for ~$150, but it could
    break at any time.

Easy to fix. Just replaced the right side lifter on my '89 200qw sunroof.
For specifics refer to Bentley manual but as I recall:

1. Tilt sunroof open (up).
2. From top (outside) of car remove small trim piece attached to underside of
sunroof.
3. Close sunroof
4. While in the car grab the underside of sunroof and pull it to the rear -
slide it into the area where the sunroof parks when it is fully open. Watch
out for the broken lifter - it may snag on the headliner.
5. You should now have access to the screws that hold the sunroof top to the
sunroof frame. Remove them, I believe its a qty of 8, 2 on each side, four
in the front. You may have to tilt the sunroof for access to the side screws
- I don't remember.
6. Remove sunroof lid. Tilt again ? Use rags (or) to protect the sunroof
and the sunroof hole - The manual suggests using tape.
7. Replace broken lifter - parts cost from Audi dealer about $55.
8. Put it back together & adjust - front of sunroof a tad lower than
surrounding sheetmetal and the rear a tad higher than surrounding sheetmetal.
