Re: UrQ A-arm bushings (Quantum version)

I have successfully done this job on two different cars that use the
metal-sleeved bushings.

To remove the old bushings from the A-arm, I clamp the arm in a vice and
use a propane torch to heat the arm until the rubber center falls out of
the bushing. (WARNING! Don't wear open-toed shoes or have your foot
directly under the bushing. That rubber's hot and will be soft enough
to bounce some!)

At that point, you'll want to wait a while for the arm to cool down. I
usually alternate between the arms and then let them cool down while you
cool off with a pint of your favorite liquid mechanic. (I prefer a
couple of the NW microbrews) Then take a hacksaw and being careful not
to cut the A-arm, score the inside of the metal sleeve. A few
well-placed blows from a hammer and chisel will knock the sleeve right
out.

This is one instance where installation is _not_ the reverse of
removal! ;-)

First, lube everything up (don't even think it, Bob Da'), I've used
vaseline successfully in the past, just be careful to not get it on the
center part of the bushing.

Then I use a large socket behind the A-arm since the bushing will
protrude a little and use my benchtop vice to press the bushing in. The
two accessories that _I_ need at this point are a 2 foot cheater bar on
the vice handle, and a 200 lb. friend to sit on the workbench so that I
don't pull it over.

YMMV, and all disclaimers apply. IOW, don't sue me if you set your
garage on fire when that flaming bushing bounces into last years
newspapers that are stacked in the corner! <grin>

HTH!
