'85 GT w/ '84 tranny?

Got a bit of a puzzler here; thought I throw it out for you folks to
chew on for a while.

All of this talk about clutches made it's way to my '85 GT. Last
Wednesday night my pressure plate fractured and made driving rather
interesting on Thursday.

Left it with the mechanic to do on Friday since I was coming down with
the Crud (tm) and wasn't planning to go to work on Friday.

Dropped by to collect the car Friday evening and I'm greeted with, "Hi!
We had a _rather interesting_ time with your car."

Now bear in mind that I trust this guy completely, but anytime I hear a
phrase like that my wallet flinches and I start to worry.

It turns out that the clutch disk for an '85 would not match up with the
splines on my tranny, but the clutch disk for an '84 fit perfectly.

Now here's the question, why? My GT is an '85 model year, build date
11/84, VIN# WAUBD0852FA074078. Were they just using up old '84 parts,
is my car an odd-ball or ??

It's definitely the close-ratio gearbox, and codes on the outside of the
transmission fit with what the Bentley says should be in an '85, so I'm
at a loss.

I know nothing's been done to the tranny (except for RedLine synth.)
since I bought the car and I found nothing in any of the records to
indicate that any service had been done, so I'm inclined to believe that
this in the transmission that the car left the dealer with.

Any thoughts? Any other '85 GT owners have similar experiences?

Thanks!

Gary
