All our 4K's had noisy lifters when we got them.  We drained a qt of oil
out and added a qt of transmission fluid and then let it run at idle for
about 45 minutes -- occasionally revving the engine-- then did a
complete oil change.  Result?  quiet lifters.  What happens is that
carbon builds up on the valve adjusting shims......it's not really
noisey lifters.  The trans. oil clears that carbon away.......problem
solved.....

BTW, thanks Chris Semple at Autobahn for that idea several years
ago.....
