Go ahead, land on the carrier !!! , Was: Intake mods...

<< Well gang, I had a fun afternoon of modifying my airbox. To begin with I
removed the thermostat that regulates the airpassage between warm air from
the exhaust manifold shroud and cool air from behind the headlight. I left
the flap open and routed a hose from the air box intake duct to behind the
turn signal. I also opened up the front of the airbox and the right hand
side(against the inner fender). I basically used my Dremel and removed
material between the molded in structural support members. Needless to
say, by seat of the pants testing it is a hint faster. It is *A LOT*
louder! IT sounds very mean..Lots of throaty induction noise! As for
removing that thermostat flap deal, I can't see any downsides to it seeing
that K & N cone conversions in the 20v cars rid of this mechanism
entirely, any comments? What was the purpose if this mechanism?

For this I need to refer back to my Private Pilot days... Back when I had
enough money to rent a Cessna and go get a fifty dollar hamburger...
45.00 for an hour of Cessna, the rest bought the grease.
Okay, your flyng along over the Delaware Bay and you see the deck of an
aircraft carrier. Always wanted to be a "Maverick" , "IceMan" or "Hollywood"
?
How do you land on it and cause the least amount of yelling ???
Claim Carburetor Ice !!!
The vacumn in a intake system causes something called Bernoulli effect that
reduces the air temperature by as much as 60 degrees F or more (pressure
is directly proportional to temperature ya know) . So on a hot humid
90 degree day you get gradual ( or sudden ) loss of power...
Why, induction ice aka: carb ice, forms because it hit the magic 32F i
nside the induction system.
By the time the angry sailors drag you out of the Cessna you can claim
that you had carb ice but all the evidence has evaporated on the hot deck
now that the engine is off... Does it work ? No. They still get mad and make
you pay to have the plane toasted by a stinger or something while they
stand there and laugh or something like that. After all, they didn't
like you landing and they sure won't let you takeoff !!! Never did it
myself.
Sure did think about it though. I heard that it's been done and the
US Navy just doesn't have much of a sense of humor.
Hence the purpose of induction heat. So on a hot humid
day your HP won't go away !!!
