A story that persistently recurs is that the crew of an Avro Shackleton thought 
it would be fun to call Mayday to a US aircraft carrier and ask if they could 
land.  It's an interesting joke - the Shackleton is derived from the Lancaster 
bomber.
 
The US captain apparently took them seriously, and jettisoned a number of 
Phantoms over the side to make room.
