Audi history

While I'm sure his tongue was in his cheek, the gentleman who was thinking of
putting a Mazda rotary engine in an Audi made a remark about having 4
triangles on the grille.

The 4 rings don't symbolize pistons, but the 4 automakers (Horch, Audi,
Wanderer, DKW) that merged to form Auto Union--in 1933, I think.

And this is how the Audi name came about: August Horch made some kind of
agreement that barred him from building cars under his own name. Horch is the
German cognate for English "hark," as in listen. His son pointed out that
Audi, from Latin "audire," to hear (obviously the root of "audio"), would be
appropriate.
