A pint every thousand miles is a _H@LL_ of a lot of oil to lose! I'm going
5,000 miles between changes on two I5 engines without the level moving from the
mid-point on the dipstick.

I'd repeat the idle situation until the smoke appears, then block off the
breathers. If the smoke persists - it's probably the rings. The valve stem
seals wouldn't leak a pint every thousand unless the valve guides themselves
were also badly worn, and even on a badly run-in engine that's unlikely at 80k.

Rings. Either way it's "open 'er up an' 'ave a gander" time.
