Thanks for your reply. I suppose the master cylinder could be the cause, but
my intuition tells me that if that's so, the effect should be same at each
front wheel, and that doesn't *seem* to be the case. 

No, my accumulator ("bomb") does *not* pass the pedal-pumping test. Two or
three quick pumps garner a PEEP and the icon.

Right now I vote for a common cause for both problems; this seems to be
supported by the chronology, and the common denominator is the hydraulic system.
