Thanks to all who responded-- the comments were very helpful.  Sorry
about the word "help" in the subject line-- didn't know it would elicit
a treatise on widgets!

Got the V8 back from the body shop-- great spray work, but taping the
stone guard didn't work out.  I would never consider trying this again. 
The shop didn't give me any trouble at all-- they're going to repaint
the whole door, and I'll pay only for a new piece of stone guard. 
They're arranging a loaner car, too.  I think I'll pull the belt molding
before taking the car back in.

It looks like the stone guard was black on both rear doors, but not a
thick layer of paint.  The parts fiche shows only one P/N for all
colors, presumably clear.  There is no sign of any body work on the
other side.  Would waxing/buffing maybe have put a little color on this,
maybe w/ scratch-hiding wax?  Anybody else have color on _top_ of the
stone guard?
