CV joint & temp gauge

About a year ago or so I experienced a problem where thr temp gauge in my '86
Coupe GT would go into the HOT! zone whenever I turned right and accelerated.
 This problem disappeared a few weeks later after I replaced a bad right CV
axle.  Yesterday the old problem resurfaced while I was driving through a
mountainous area.  Yes I was pushing the car pretty hard through the turns.
 I've also noticed a metal clanking sound when I roll over broken pavement.
 When I jacked up the car to look at the suspension I noticed that you can
rotate the wheels alot and when the wheel does stop there is a metal clank.
 CV problem again?  Or are these 2 separate problems?
