Why?

Well, in some ways.  First of all, it's shot in black and white and at very 
high contrast.  It looks like the twisty main roads in the black slate area of 
North Wales, just after some typical Welsh weather (think Seattle).  The only 
colour is the leaf/butterfly that floats down on to the hedgehog as it's 
meandering across the road.  The "hedgehog in alarm" bit you got right, but the 
shot is held for only a very few frames - a small fraction of a second.  The 
build-up, cutting between hedgehog and speeding car, is quite long but the 
ending is _very_ fast indeed - you have to watch it a few times to get what's 
really going on.
 
Have you seen any of the high contrast black and white commercials over there - 
the trolls with the buckets of ball bearings, etc.?
