I'd like to start this reply with an empassioned plea that we don't get
into a huge discussion about audio again ;) Solomon you can browse the
archives and find a huge volume of posts on this subject. Instead of
sending you there, I'll just summarise what I remember about them (those
archives can be a nightmare to sort through...)

Basically, the way to improve the sound quality the most is to replace
the speakers. I don't know how the 90 90q stereo was set up, but in
general, and with most cars (not just Audis) you'll get better sound
from the rear speakers than from the front speakers, because the rear
speakers can be bigger, and in the rear you can usually fit a seperate
woofer and tweeter.
So first advice is to fiddle with the fader and try to get more sound
out of the back.
After that, I'd replace the front speakers (be careful, make sure you
get speakers with proper ohm ratings; I've heard something about 2
ohms? Anyone know about this?). This is most likely to get you the
biggest sound improvement, but be careful. Shop around a lot, and make
sure you can listen to the speakers you're getting, preferably set up in
a car. Then look through catalogs and you'll find a much better price.
If you're really picky about the sound quality, you'll probably want to
replace the head unit just because no one who's really picky about sound
quality ever likes the stock head unit. It's all really a matter of
taste.
