I bet it was a right-hander.

My  old  10-valve urq went totally manic in the end. You had
to   go   quite   fast   on   left   handers   to  turn  the
over-temperature OFF!

The  current  20v  is  more  like  yours. The maps and other
loose  objects  have  to  be  sticking  to left-hand windows
before  the  over-temp  comes  on... .at which moments it is
nice to be told that the car is enjoying it too!
