5000 Back Seatback Removal

Well, I finally found a quattro worth buying. I bought an 87 5000S
quattro. The problem is I need get to the child restraint anchors on the
rear deck. Every other q that I looked at had little plastic covers over
the anchors (I'm in Canada!), but this one does not. The anchors (and the
hardware, in one position) are there, but they are between the metal deck
and the fibre deck cover. I would prefer not to cut the fibre deck cover,
so I thought that I would remove the rear seat and slide the strap to the
anchor between the two layers. So far so good. I removed the seat bottom,
and found that there were not screws holding the seatback on, but bent
over tabs. So I carefully bent those over and released the bottom of the
seatback. I then realized that the tops were anchored by where the
headrests are located. I removed the spring clips that hold the headrests
in place and removed the headrests. But the seatback top is still firmly
attached to the car! The plastic headrest receptacles appear to be firmly
attached to both the seat and the car, but I can't figure out how to
separate them! From the trunk side, the is glued on carpet covering that
area, I don't really want to peel that back, but I don't know what to try
next.

So if anybody is still reading, that has either done this or has manuals
that explain this process, please let me know what I missing! It doesn't
appear to be very intuitive.

Thanks,
Rob
