PITA alert - 84-88 5Kt (Boost guage install)
Deciding that I didn't want the "Robbie Racer" look (apologies in advance to
Bobs D and M), I decided to place my Autometer boost guage in the dash aside
the steering column below the instrument cluster. Reasoning was simple - it
was the only flat spot big and close enough so I could glance down through
the hole in the steering wheel and see it plainly (2 5/8" guage). Besides, I
could then talk myself into a Momo...
Removing appropo panels, I ascertained there would be enough room behind
(iffy), and decided to go for it. The first part went easy (cutting the
naugahyde and foam). Lo and behold, we find one of the reasons these cars
are built so well... 18 guage steel dash with foam on both sides so you
can't tell.
2+ HOURS with a dremel tool and the deed is done... You are forwarned... (It
needs no bolts, being a permanently installed press fit). Guess what -
microscopic steel splinters hurt like heck...
