Re: '92 100S and "The Shakes"
In a message dated 97-04-07 00:37:07 EDT, you write:
<< My '92 100S (non-q) has the shakes up front, mostly from the right side.
It
is mostly noticeable when I turn left >>
Obviously, the car would prefer you to be more conservative.
You mention that you have tried rotating the tires but the time
line confused me ( I'm not very bright ) it still sounded like you
"rotated " into this problem with your feather edged tires.
<< should mention that I do not feel it is the tires, since all tires have
been balanced (recently, since they are now mounted on my new Borbets!!) and
rotated (especially so, in the proper "direction" to take care of some
feathering that happened LY at LimeRock at the QCUSA event). Also, I felt
this "vibration" before I got the new Borbets, with the OEM rims, so it is
not related to the new rims. >>
Ballance is only one way for a tire to induce a shimmy.
Other possibilities are "excessive run-out" or "flat spoting".
Since one of the ways you are experiencing this problem
is by turning I think you should consider these as possibilites.
The point being the tires are the "gyros" and given a perfect
world help induce stability with their rotating mass.
Warped brake rotors ??? Well I suppose anything is possible
but I think that when you have warped rotors you are more
likely to experience somthing like a spongy pedal if
they haven't been applied for a while or you would feal
pulsations when you applied the brakes.
But, these aren't the only possibilities, check that CV
joint again. Outter CV joints are more likely to get stupid
while turning.
