'92 100S and "The Shakes"
My '92 100S (non-q) has the shakes up front, mostly from the right side. It
is mostly noticeable when I turn left (no, I haven't been driving it on the
NASCAR circuit... hee, hee...), and it kinda' shakes/shudders. I also feel
it on the highway, especially as speeds begin to increase.
It is mostly felt in the seat-of-my-pants, as a driveline vibration,
although the steering wheel also shakes a bit back-and-forth, mostly at the
time when I am turning left.
I brought it in to have it checked out, specifically for worn wheel
bearings, since it sounded like one was bad (i.e. the right one).
The mechanic checked them out, and he said they were fine. He looked at
everything else (a cursory check for looseness...), and said everything
looks and feels tight.
I'm thinking that it is a warped front right brake rotor, especially
considering that I am about due for a brake job (i.e. I've never done them
since I bought the car with 49k miles... and the car now has 105k miles...
and I'm not sure if the previous owner every had them done...). I had
brought the car in a while ago for a brake check, and was told there was
still enough "meat" to keep driving for a while. I did, however, now I think
it is time... especially if it corrects the problem!!
What I am asking of this esteemed group is: What else could it be besides a
warped brake rotor??
I should mention that I do not feel it is the tires, since all tires have
been balanced (recently, since they are now mounted on my new Borbets!!) and
rotated (especially so, in the proper "direction" to take care of some
feathering that happened LY at LimeRock at the QCUSA event). Also, I felt
this "vibration" before I got the new Borbets, with the OEM rims, so it is
not related to the new rims.
Any and all thoughts are appreciated. This is driving me nuts!!
TIA
