Not exactly true.  VW will continue to use (and build) the VR6 in addition to
the new VR5.  The Mercedes-Benz deal is simply a commercial transaction
whereby M-B is buying VW-made VR6s to use in a European van application.
 They didn't buy the engine rights or the production line, just a bunch of
engines.  Happily, this should help keep the VRn engine family available in
VWs and reasonably affordable, as it boosts capacity utilization at the
production facility in Salzgitter (industry reports had been mentioning a low
utilization/high unit cost problem).

So, did you hear the one about the VR4? (...VR7?)
