I read a posting that this device could be bought as a separate
part from the dealer. I ordered one (P/N 8L0-959-753-01C)...

It appears that the service reps were not clear on the issue of
activating this device and told me to make an appointment and
come back because this may take an hour!! Has anyone else
bought the keyless entry unit as an after delivery part and is it
true that it needs all this time for *programming* it? >>
Keyless entry can be added to any 1997 model year Audi (U.S. and Canada)
which is not factory equipped with this item. The only parts needed are the
transmitter key fobs (one or two, your choice since you are buying). No
hardware has to be added to the car. Installation is a matter of
"activation." It involves a technician programming the central lock control
unit using the VAG 1551 scan tool. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes.
The dealer should have a Technical Bulletin on the topic. Of course, he can
charge what he pleases, but you might want to talk to your original
salesperson. If he/she has half a brain, it seems that he/she might get it
done for you on a gratis basis. After all, they do depend on repeat business
and they already made money on you for the car and the remote locking
transmitter.
