... that's the one I was referring to in my original reply ... I have heard
that there is someone that lives near San Francisco that has one. Tom, I'd
certainly like to see the pictures that you have ...
I looked in the book I referred to yesterday. Interesting to note that
the Auto Union cars showed up under DKW. The DKW/Auto-Union cars were
imported into the US from 1954-1965 (from the info in the book). The
older DKW cars had model names like Sonderklasse 3=6 and Masterklasse 4CV
in the early years. The 3=6 name implied that a 3-cyl 2-stroke had the
same number of power strokes per revolution as a 6-cyl 4-stroke ...
There were a couple of interesting historical notes ... which I found to
be interesting ... "In 1954, DKW won the European championship for produc-
tion touring cars finishing far ahead of its competitor." ... "A brochure
at the 1956 NY auto show read DKW automobiles are famous not only as fast
touring cars for long distance traveling, but also for their sports suc-
cesses all over the world." The more things change ... :)
In 1958 DKW offered the 3/6 Monza sports coupe in the US, and the Auto-Union
AU1000 models were offered that year as well. The AU1000 line included the
deluxe coupe, roadster, deluxe hardtop and wagon models from 1958 through
1962. In 1959 the DKW F11 model was imported, this appears to be the last
imported in 1965, followed by the Audi line a couple years later.
Merlin, I'd be interested to hear back what model you actually find. If it
turned out to be an AU1000SP ...
