I have replaced brushes on my 5kS 87, recently. There is no need to
remove alternator for that operation. However, you have to take apart
starter 1.1 kW in my case to reach brushes. It should be possible with
the starter on the car. I found it easier with starter removed, only two
bolts to be removed.
