Re: Stereo speakers in a 4000Q

Somebody asked about putting 6x9s in a 4000Q:

I am of the opinion that you can't go any bigger than 5 1/4 in the
rear deck, due to it's goofy two-tier shape.

What I did is to make a new one-tier deck out of plywood, that is of
the height of the upper level (just below the back window) of the
original deck. I was then able to put two 6x9s and two 10"
subwoofers. I did cut the metal underneath, but it's not to bad. The
same brackets I made to support the plywood also serve to offset the
weakness in the sheet metal after cutting these holes. I upholstered
the plywood, and it looks as if it could be OE.

It was a lot of trial and error work to shape the plywood just right,
including adding some wood at the sides to taper it to meet the side
quarter windows nicely. I just pretended I was Norm Abrahms!! The
brackets took some time too, and welding was required. I think Beefy
is better though, because I didn't want any rattles.

In the front, I used an Infinity speaker system with a separate woofer
and tweeter. Yes, the front speakers are not easily replaced, because
they are integral with their grilles. I just gutted them, and mounted
the tweeters in the speaker shells, and put the woofers in the doors.
     It works well.
