UrQ in Classic & Sportscar
Hi all,
This month's 'Classic and Sportscar' has an article about the works rally
teams, with snippets about several different teams under the intriguing
title: 'Cutting corners, bending rules' Beside a spectacular picture of a
rally UrQ in full flight, there's the following:
<Audi Quattro
Lights out meant no flapping
Audi used every possible stratagem to turn the turbocharged Quattro into a
winner, even devising a novel solution to prevent the crowded engine bay
getting too hot during the 1981 Acropolis Rally. The Quattro's inner
headlamps were removed and replaced with rubber flaps which remained closed
when the car was at rest (or being scrutineered!) but were blown wide open
at speed, ducting a great deal of fresh air into the engine bay.
This, and the fact that the team used auxiliary batteries- placed in the
footwell- to aid hot restarts, prompted the Acropolis organisers to
disqualify the 'works' Quattros on the spot. All protests were in vain, and
team manager Walter Treser lost his job.>
Interesting!
