If my memory serves me, the SAAB's had the Ford 4 Cylinder
mentioned in an earlier post as being the replacement for the
problematic wankle.
Nope, in fact Saab bought or copied DKW's design for the 2-stroke and
developed it. I have it in the books somewhere, but am too lazy to check
(in my defense, I've about ten fat volumes to check for this) If I come
across it, I'll post it. Saab brought in the V4 when it was clear that
2-strokes would run into problems with (US) emission standards. The Wankel
was a NSU-only development, and was in fact fully developed- in the late
'70s some Audi 100s (the first 5000) ran around with Wankel engines. The
public had however lost its faith and Audi decided to drop the Wankel
quietly. Might also have something to do with the rotary's legendary
thirst- the oil crisis had left its mark on fuel prices by then... Mazda
has recently dropped its last Ro-powered car, the RX-01. I've not read
anything about new plans for this engine.
My $.02
