Sorting Out the Engines

Saab did use Ford's 1.7 liter V4 from the mid-'60s in the model 96. 
Unrefined is the word that comes to mind, although I expect they were
tough old birds.  Prior to that, Saabs were powered by three cylinder
two-strokes.  These were not DKW engines, but there may have been a
developmental connection.  I haven't had time to research the point.

For the record, Saab used a Triumph-based engine in the model 99 (a
lot smoother than the V4).  The current V6 is Opel-based.
