Audi has changed its opinion on this one. Initially they said AT
fluid never needs changing or regular checking by driver. Afterwards
they decided that 30K miles changing might be a good idea and the AT
fluid should be checked at regular service intervals (at least every 6
months). I decided to get (for $8 or so) the gauge from a dealer ...
No one seems to know for sure whether it is OK to keep the gauge in
place all the time -- by mistake, I drove with it in with no ill
effects, but I usually keep it in the trunk. However, recently
Someone mentioned to me that he bought a used 92 with the gauge in
place. My guess is that it was not originally there.
If your AT fluid was never changed I would certainly do it ASAP using
Redline ATF.
