Not true.  C&D clocked 0-60 and quarter mile times of: 

          GTI       Corrado
0-60      6.7         6.4
1/4     15.2@91    15.0@94

I've done 0-60 in 6.68 according to my GTech/Pro with AVS-I rubber and
minimal wheelspin.
