not sure about the 5k, but on a 4k, but if you are really careful, on
the non hinged edge of the door, there is a rubber grommet that once
removed, shows the the difficult mounting screw for the door handle
mechanism. 
Remove that with a magnetic screw driver, being sure not to drop the
screw and doubling the labor time (nope, never happened to me, uh huh,
no way :) )

Pop off the thin metal strip on the outside handle with a small
screwdriver (flat blade) a,d remove those screws.

Move, twist, jimmy the whole handle out from the hole in the door panel
and you pop off the levers and rods with little difficulty. 

To sum up, take you time and you can save a lot of swearing and
scrapped knuckles.

FYI, if you say you have a 85 VW Rabbit, your cost for a door handle is
reduced 50%. Go figure
