Everyone driving cars should have the fear of God in them _ALL_ the time.
 
I don't know what it's like in the USA, but over here the tyre shops will check 
a wheel for balance at a very modest charge.  Seems a worthwhile investment for 
a few $$.  Some of the other things it might be are equally unpleasant.
