i bugged the dealer to have a look at the parts cd, and talked to their service people about the rs2 and so have come up with some further information for those interested...
engine:
new high lift cams along with the larger turbo are responsible for the improved breathing of the engine as opposed to the 20vt in my ur-q. the rs2 engine is a much smoother rev'er and will sing all the way to 7,000 without the harshness of the 20vt above 4k. perhaps this harshness is also a product of the k24 running out of puff? subjectively the seamless slug of power is extremely impressive, as is the flexibility of the unit and the lack of 'temperament'.
the fuel pump comes straight from a porker 993, injectors are high flow items.
boost is 1.4 bar (i think the s2 was 1.1)
the airfilter is a special low resistance item, along with a low pressure (larger) stainless exhaust.
brakes:
302mm 4 pot brembos (aka porsche 968cs) ventilated from and read. not drilled.
stopping (autocar test):
30mph 9.4m; 50mph 26.1m; 70mph 50.6m; 102mph (1/4 mile) 108.3m
fade: not measurable
gearbox:
6 speed s2 box with strengthened 1st gear. ratios unchanged. uses the 4.11 diff.
springs and dampers:
no change from the s2 except for higher rebound damping (bilsteins) and heavier anti-roll bars
performance:(autocar test)
1/4 mile is 13.5 @102mph
1km is 24.9 @129mph
0-60 in 4.8 sec
0-100 13.1s
30-50 6th 12.5; 5th 8.4; 4th 5.6; 3rd 3.7; 2nd 2.1
50-70 6th 7.7; 5th 5.0; 4th 3.6; 3rd 2.8
70-90 6th 6.1; 5th 4.8; 4th 4.0; 3rd 3.7
90-110 6th 6.8; 5th 5.5; 4th 5.7
110-130 6th 9.4; 5th 9.1
autocar say that the rs2 is faster (0-60) than the ferrari 456, the 512 tr and any porsche other than the new turbo. should also be faster than the 355; not sure about the marnello.
not bad for a station wagon... actung baby!
