CD changer for Audi

I am acquiring a 1988 2.8q with Bose, and find that the optional CD changer
sold by by my Audi dealer is quite overpriced (>$700). I would prefer to
purchase a $300+ Alpine changer from an audio dealer and have it
professionally installed, provided an aftermarket adapter is available to
properly address the reversed DIN connection on the factory radio.

My Audi dealer tells me that this strategy won't work--that even if I can
find an adapter, the function in the radio/changer will not be the same as
in the dealer installed unit; and that I would require a remote and a
"seeker" unit. (?!?)

Has anyone had any experience with this installation? Any suggestions on
where to find an adapter would be appreciated, as well as a good source on a
changer. Thanks in advance for your help.
